Daily Reflections From My Window

November 25, 2021 Thursday: Happy Thanksgiving!

“For food that stays our hunger,

For rest that brings us ease,

For homes where memories linger,

We give our thanks for these.”

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

What are you thankful for this year? I’m thankful for my family. We’ll be together this year. We’ll have turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, peas with pearl onions (thank you Lesley-it will be a surprise for Jay!), jello salad, sweet potatoes two ways, cranberry (Ocean Spray in the can) and pumpkin pies. It’s been a while since we’ve hosted a group so I’m really looking forward to seeing my family after such a long time. Lucky for me, everyone is bringing bits a pieces so all I did was the turkey, stuffing, potatoes and pies. They’re all bringing the hard stuff. We have plenty of room to stay distanced and the weather is supposed to be beautiful so those who wish to be can be outside. It’s all good.

Our family has always served turkey, since it is the tradition in this country. It’s supposedly what the pilgrims ate after the native Americans taught them to prepare it. That’s what we were taught. We were brought up that Thanksgiving was unique to our country and a celebration of our heritage. It wasn’t just a day off from school or work. Though as kids that seemed great! It was a special day to celebrate with family and you ate turkey. I had the Today Show on yesterday as I was preparing for today and they were highlighting what people ate at Thanksgiving. Turkey seemed to be optional (really?) and a favorite side was Mac and cheese. Really? You can have that anytime. It was always the tradition in our home that we only had turkey and the fixings on Thanksgiving and Christmas and that was it. It made it special. Of course we had mashed potatoes often, but not the other sides. Only on those two occasions. It was a big deal to have turkey and we savored it. That’s what we do now. I hope it’s still special. The sky is spectacular this morning, it’s 34* and I am going to keep this short because like you, I have a turkey to put in the oven. I prepared it and seasoned it last night so all I have to do is pop it in the oven. I did as much as I could yesterday so I just need to peel potatoes and set the table. I’ll give the alpacas a little extra food today. I am thankful for them. In the meantime, Find something to be thankful for. Every single day is a gift. I’m off to tend my passion.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving Day! I’m thankful for you.
